Hello everyone and welcome to #PerfectNumberWatchesVeggieTales—Perfect Number (@pnumber628) 2017-11-19
Today I'll be livetweeting VeggieTales "Dave & the Giant Pickle" (1996) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mz1LYWM00zA … #PerfectNumberWatchesVeggieTales—Perfect Number (@pnumber628) 2017-11-19
We open up on Larry Boy, instead of the typical "Bob & Larry on the counter" #PerfectNumberWatchesVeggieTales—Perfect Number (@pnumber628) 2017-11-19
Here's LarryBoy #PerfectNumberWatchesVeggieTales pic.twitter.com/WngsQOASrm—Perfect Number (@pnumber628) 2017-11-19
"Evildoers beware! You are no match for the awesome power of LarryBoy and his super-suction ears!" #PerfectNumberWatchesVeggieTales—Perfect Number (@pnumber628) 2017-11-19
LarryBoy has gotten himself suctioned onto a wall, he's stuck #PerfectNumberWatchesVeggieTales—Perfect Number (@pnumber628) 2017-11-19
Okay so it seems like the issue is Larry thinks he's not good enough so he needs to be a superhero #PerfectNumberWatchesVeggieTales—Perfect Number (@pnumber628) 2017-11-19
So this is going to be a lesson about self-esteem/ accepting yourself #PerfectNumberWatchesVeggieTales—Perfect Number (@pnumber628) 2017-11-19
Y'all. Just take that in for a second. David & Goliath is being framed as a story abt accepting yourself. #PerfectNumberWatchesVeggieTales—Perfect Number (@pnumber628) 2017-11-19
So we open up on a bunch of sheep, and Dave and his brothers #PerfectNumberWatchesVeggieTales—Perfect Number (@pnumber628) 2017-11-19
hahahahahhaha their sheep tip over #PerfectNumberWatchesVeggieTales—Perfect Number (@pnumber628) 2017-11-19
Dave is the smallest brother, and his brothers bully him #PerfectNumberWatchesVeggieTales—Perfect Number (@pnumber628) 2017-11-19
The brothers are all like "one of my sheep fell over, can you come pick it up?" #PerfectNumberWatchesVeggieTales—Perfect Number (@pnumber628) 2017-11-19
Pa Grape is their dad, Jesse. He has horrible news! #PerfectNumberWatchesVeggieTales—Perfect Number (@pnumber628) 2017-11-19
The Philistines are attacking!—Perfect Number (@pnumber628) 2017-11-19
Larry: "Bob, what are the Philippines?"
Bob: "The Philippines are a group of islands off the coast of southeast asia"
#PerfectNumberWatchesVeggieTales
King Saul is putting together an army. All the brothers are ready to go! But they all tell Dave he is too little to join the army. #PerfectNumberWatchesVeggieTales—Perfect Number (@pnumber628) 2017-11-19
"Big ppl do big things and little ppl do little things. So, stay with the sheep." #PerfectNumberWatchesVeggieTales—Perfect Number (@pnumber628) 2017-11-19
hahahahhaha wait you guys, you have to have a look at the two battle camps #PerfectNumberWatchesVeggieTales—Perfect Number (@pnumber628) 2017-11-19
literally two hills in the middle of the desert. these are the Israelites' & Philistines' battle camps. #PerfectNumberWatchesVeggieTales pic.twitter.com/Dr4PaiCN08—Perfect Number (@pnumber628) 2017-11-19
"And, as was the custom in their day, the armies lined up and yelled at each other." #PerfectNumberWatchesVeggieTales—Perfect Number (@pnumber628) 2017-11-19
wowwwww the philistines have exaggerated French accents. there are even subtitles. #PerfectNumberWatchesVeggieTales—Perfect Number (@pnumber628) 2017-11-19
philistines suggest that they can each send out their strongest man. King Saul (Archibald Asparagus) reasons that the Philistines are "a little on the small side" so he agrees. #PerfectNumberWatchesVeggieTales—Perfect Number (@pnumber628) 2017-11-19
Goliath the giant pickle shows up. Then we break for a silly song with Larry. He loves his lips! #PerfectNumberWatchesVeggieTales—Perfect Number (@pnumber628) 2017-11-19
Larry is telling his therapist about how much he loves his lips #PerfectNumberWatchesVeggieTales—Perfect Number (@pnumber628) 2017-11-19
Interesting making a song about Larry's lips when they didn't really animate him to have visible lips.... #PerfectNumberWatchesVeggieTales—Perfect Number (@pnumber628) 2017-11-19
"On the day I got my tooth I had to kiss my Great Aunt Ruth, she had a beard, and it felt weird." Headcanon that Great Aunt Ruth is genderqueer #PerfectNumberWatchesVeggieTales—Perfect Number (@pnumber628) 2017-11-19
"Ten days after I turned 8, got my lips stuck in a gate. My friends all laughed. And I just stood there until the fire department came and broke the lock with a crowbar..." #PerfectNumberWatchesVeggieTales—Perfect Number (@pnumber628) 2017-11-19
"and I had to spend the next 6 weeks in lip rehab with this kid named Oscar who got stung by a bee right on the lip, & we couldn't even talk to each other until the 6th week bc both our lips were so swollen..." #PerfectNumberWatchesVeggieTales—Perfect Number (@pnumber628) 2017-11-19
"and when he did start speaking he just spoke Polish and I only know like 3 words in Polish except now I know 4 bc Oscar taught me the word for lip: Usta!" #PerfectNumberWatchesVeggieTales—Perfect Number (@pnumber628) 2017-11-19
"My friends all laughed ... Usta!"#PerfectNumberWatchesVeggieTales—Perfect Number (@pnumber628) 2017-11-19
Okay back to our story about Dave & the giant pickle #PerfectNumberWatchesVeggieTales—Perfect Number (@pnumber628) 2017-11-19
The Israelites all ran & hid. Goliath comes back every day to see if anyone will fight him. They all hide. #PerfectNumberWatchesVeggieTales—Perfect Number (@pnumber628) 2017-11-19
Dave brings pizza to his brothers at their camp. #PerfectNumberWatchesVeggieTales—Perfect Number (@pnumber628) 2017-11-19
Dave sees Goliath & asks his brothers, "well who's gonna fight him?" His brothers are like, are you crazy? #PerfectNumberWatchesVeggieTales—Perfect Number (@pnumber628) 2017-11-19
Dave is like "HAVE YOU FORGOTTEN? WE'RE THE CHILDREN OF GOD!" #PerfectNumberWatchesVeggieTales—Perfect Number (@pnumber628) 2017-11-19
So...... Dave believes the Israelites are guaranteed victory because they're "the children of God"? #PerfectNumberWatchesVeggieTales—Perfect Number (@pnumber628) 2017-11-19
oh my godddddddd—Perfect Number (@pnumber628) 2017-11-19
King Saul: "You're not going to sing, are you?"
Dave: [nods]
King Saul: "Couldn't you just play your harp and I'll throw things at you?" #PerfectNumberWatchesVeggieTales
Dave sings about how "with God's help little guys can do big things too"—Perfect Number (@pnumber628) 2017-11-19
King Saul gives him armor. It's too big. Dave says "you know I think maybe I should just be plain old me"
#PerfectNumberWatchesVeggieTales
Dave gets 5 smooth stones #PerfectNumberWatchesVeggieTales—Perfect Number (@pnumber628) 2017-11-19
Goliath: "Am I a dog that you come at me with sticks?"—Perfect Number (@pnumber628) 2017-11-19
Dave: "I don't exactly know what you mean, but you are not a dog, you are a really big guy that wants to beat me up" #PerfectNumberWatchesVeggieTales
you guyyyyyyssss the pickle doesn't have hands but somehow is wearing boxing gloves #PerfectNumberWatchesVeggieTales pic.twitter.com/5qCugxMqGd—Perfect Number (@pnumber628) 2017-11-19
Dave spins the sling/stone around his head #PerfectNumberWatchesVeggieTales—Perfect Number (@pnumber628) 2017-11-19
stone hits goliath on the forehead. goliath falls down, philistines all run away. #PerfectNumberWatchesVeggieTales—Perfect Number (@pnumber628) 2017-11-19
And that's the end of the story. Happy ending! Not really much is said about how they're in a war.... #PerfectNumberWatchesVeggieTales—Perfect Number (@pnumber628) 2017-11-19
lolololol Bob hates the "what we have learned" song #PerfectNumberWatchesVeggieTales—Perfect Number (@pnumber628) 2017-11-19
Bob says the moral of the story is that David didn't need to change, it wasn't true that being little meant he couldn't do things. #PerfectNumberWatchesVeggieTales—Perfect Number (@pnumber628) 2017-11-19
QWERTY gives them the verse "with God, all things are possible"—Perfect Number (@pnumber628) 2017-11-19
Larry: "I've always wanted to be a chicken. Do you think God would turn me into a chicken?"
Bob explains no, it only means we can do stuff in God's will.
#PerfectNumberWatchesVeggieTales
Bob reassures Larry that he can still dress up as LarryBoy, as long as he remembers that "plain old Larry" is special too #PerfectNumberWatchesVeggieTales—Perfect Number (@pnumber628) 2017-11-19
I have some questions about how LarryBoy's face mask perfectly covers his eyelids #PerfectNumberWatchesVeggieTales—Perfect Number (@pnumber628) 2017-11-19
So that's the end of VeggieTales "Dave & the Giant Pickle." Let's discuss. #PerfectNumberWatchesVeggieTales—Perfect Number (@pnumber628) 2017-11-19
So here's the angle they took on the "David & Goliath" story: David was the youngest brother, so everyone thought he wasn't able to do big important things. But with God's help, he could! #PerfectNumberWatchesVeggieTales—Perfect Number (@pnumber628) 2017-11-19
Therefore, kids, if ppl think you're not good enough bc you're little, or you need to change yourself in order to be accepted, that's wrong. You are good just the way you are. #PerfectNumberWatchesVeggieTales—Perfect Number (@pnumber628) 2017-11-19
Okay, I agree w that message. And definitely agree that it's common for kids to feel like they're not able/allowed to do important things bc everyone thinks they're too little. #PerfectNumberWatchesVeggieTales—Perfect Number (@pnumber628) 2017-11-19
But it's awfully bizarre to use the story of frickin DAVID AND GOLIATH to teach this self-acceptance message #PerfectNumberWatchesVeggieTales—Perfect Number (@pnumber628) 2017-11-19
Like, they see the story of David & Goliath as "everyone said David couldn't do this thing bc he was too little, but w God's help he was able to do the thing, isn't that great"—Perfect Number (@pnumber628) 2017-11-19
#PerfectNumberWatchesVeggieTales
which is true, but... umm, don't you think we should comment on the fact that "the thing" was killing someone in a war? #PerfectNumberWatchesVeggieTales—Perfect Number (@pnumber628) 2017-11-19
There are a lot of Old Testament stories about "God helped the Israelites win a battle" & they get turned into cute little stories for kids w/o grappling with the whole war/killing aspect #PerfectNumberWatchesVeggieTales—Perfect Number (@pnumber628) 2017-11-19
I used to wonder how stories got chosen for kids' Sunday school lessons. Why Adam&Eve but not Cain&Abel? Why Balaam's donkey but not Moses directing them to keep captive women as slaves? #PerfectNumberWatchesVeggieTales—Perfect Number (@pnumber628) 2017-11-19
Why Joshua&Jericho but not any other battles in the conquest of Canaan? Why the plagues of Egypt but not the building of the tabernacle? Why Jonah but not Isaiah? #PerfectNumberWatchesVeggieTales—Perfect Number (@pnumber628) 2017-11-19
Why Shadrach/Meshach/Abednego but not Ezekiel? Why Elijah being fed by ravens but not Zechariah murdered by king Joash? #PerfectNumberWatchesVeggieTales—Perfect Number (@pnumber628) 2017-11-19
How are bible stories chosen for Sunday school class?—Perfect Number (@pnumber628) 2017-11-19
Is it the stories which are most important to Christian doctrine? No.
Is it the ones that are easy to understand & have a clear moral lesson? No. (I'm looking at you, Balaam's donkey.)
#PerfectNumberWatchesVeggieTales
Is it bible stories which are PG rated, with no sex/violence? HAHAHAH no. #PerfectNumberWatchesVeggieTales—Perfect Number (@pnumber628) 2017-11-19
Here's my conclusion: The stories they teach kids in Sunday School are the ones that lend themselves to cool illustrations. That's it. That's THE criteria. #PerfectNumberWatchesVeggieTales—Perfect Number (@pnumber628) 2017-11-19
Wow, a boat w 2 of every animal? COOL, kids will love to see pictures of that! A talking donkey? Oh we are SO teaching this one in Sunday school. A kid fighting a giant guy? Yep put it in. #PerfectNumberWatchesVeggieTales—Perfect Number (@pnumber628) 2017-11-19
Anyway my point is: The story of David&Goliath raises some uncomfortable questions abt killing & war & God's role in that. But it's a staple of children's Sunday school lessons (w none of those ethical issues addressed) bc it has cool imagery. #PerfectNumberWatchesVeggieTales—Perfect Number (@pnumber628) 2017-11-19
Ya know, if we believed that David&Goliath is a myth rather than a true thing that happened, it would make sense to ignore the ethical questions abt killing & just talk abt it in terms of David's trust in God.—Perfect Number (@pnumber628) 2017-11-19
Just sayin'.
#PerfectNumberWatchesVeggieTales
I find it very interesting that evangelicals are so insistent abt "these bible stories REALLY HAPPENED & i will FIGHT anyone who says otherwise" but... #PerfectNumberWatchesVeggieTales—Perfect Number (@pnumber628) 2017-11-19
... the moral lessons they get out of the stories are very spiritualized & not at all abt the literal thing that happened in the story. #PerfectNumberWatchesVeggieTales—Perfect Number (@pnumber628) 2017-11-19
Like pastors are like "yes David&Goliath REALLY HAPPENED" but they never say "and the moral of the story is God can help you kill your enemies"- they always make it more abstract/spiritualized #PerfectNumberWatchesVeggieTales—Perfect Number (@pnumber628) 2017-11-19
Seems to me that if we believe David&Goliath is a true story, then killing one's enemies is CERTAINLY within the scope of things God can totally help you do #PerfectNumberWatchesVeggieTales—Perfect Number (@pnumber628) 2017-11-19
I've written a few blog posts on this:—Perfect Number (@pnumber628) 2017-11-19

#PerfectNumberWatchesVeggieTales
Anyway let's move on. What else can we discuss about "Dave & the Giant Pickle"? #PerfectNumberWatchesVeggieTales—Perfect Number (@pnumber628) 2017-11-19
Well basically in summary I think the lesson abt self-acceptance is good, but it's a little messed-up that David&Goliath was the story they used to teach it. #PerfectNumberWatchesVeggieTales—Perfect Number (@pnumber628) 2017-11-19
