They are eighteen, nineteen, twenty and should be writing about gathering friends, stocking a ship with provisions, going out to seek adventure. 5. It’s not ‘pick and choose.’ It’s pick a side. (July 24) So, the point that Fred Clark is making here, that the bible is a collection of arguments and as readers we choose which side we agree with- yes, I basically believe that, BUT I think this doesn't quite answer the "picking and choosing" accusation. 

When conservative Christians say progressive Christians are not legit because we are "picking and choosing" which biblical texts we agree with, that comes from a perspective where the whole bible is correct, the whole bible is in charge of us, the whole bible teaches 1 consistent thing, and where there appear to be differences of opinion in the bible, that's just because we need to work harder to understand it- it *does* teach 1 consistent thing, if understood correctly. You can't just believe that parts you like and ignore the parts you don't like. You have to believe and obey the whole thing.

But the "progressive" view that Clark is talking about here is different from that. He's saying, the bible presents different voices talking about these topics (inclusion vs exclusion is one of the big topics), responding to each other, and some of them are wrong. The bible is not in charge of us; instead, we read the bible and judge which arguments make sense. 

So in order for this "it's about picking a side" idea to make sense, we have to take a step back and talk about what the bible is. Is it just simply true? Is it teaching 1 thing? Is it in charge of us? No, no, and no.

On ZOEgirl and saying how you really feel

ZOEgirl was a Christian band that was active in the early 2000's, around the time I was in high school. It was one of my favorite bands; my favorite song was Different Kind of Free.

Big words about one's commitment to God, how it's so much bigger and more important than anything else, how it's worth dedicating your life to. 

Anyway, what are the members of ZOEgirl up to now? 

Well, Alisa Childers is an author, publishing books like Another Gospel?: A Lifelong Christian Seeks Truth in Response to Progressive Christianity and Live Your Truth and Other Lies: Exposing Popular Deceptions That Make Us Anxious, Exhausted, and Self-Obsessed. She's all about responding to progressive Christianity and telling everyone why it's bad and we need to stand firm on the truths that conservative/evangelical Christianity taught us. Uh, as a queer ex-evangelical Christian I don't really agree with her on that.

(no idea what the other 2 members of ZOEgirl are doing now- I'm just writing about this because Childers came to my attention recently)

Anyway. Apparently Childers recently made a podcast discussing Sheila Wray Gregoire's book "The Great Sex Rescue" (which I reviewed here). Gregoire wrote a blog post in response: Alisa Childers Owes Evangelical Women an Apology for Dismissing Their Pain. "The Great Sex Rescue" calls out the conservative Christian teaching that wives are required to have sex with their husbands on demand, because men need it, and the wife is obligated to do all the work to make it a good experience for the husband, and nobody cares about women's orgasms, etc. It's very good that "The Great Sex Rescue" is responding to this teaching; it's extremely messed-up that the typical marriage advice from conservative Christians says things like that. But anyway, apparently on her podcast, Childers said no one's actually teaching this "obligation sex" message, no one's telling women they need to prioritize their husbands' "sexual needs" even when they haven't even healed from childbirth, etc. (Fact check: They ARE teaching that!) And apparently the podcast also spent a lot of time wondering if it's even okay to talk about sex and orgasms.

I don't know why this bothers me so much. I sang her songs expressing my feelings about my devotion to God, and 20 years later she has bad opinions about Christian teaching on sex and marriage... Why does this bother me so much? People are allowed to have bad opinions on things; it's not like this is some kind of massive betrayal of me personally because I was a fan of her music when I was in high school.

I guess it makes me realize that... the music, and the experience of enjoying the music, was a different thing than I thought it was. Singing those worship songs, I was fooled into thinking it was an environment where I can be completely honest about my deepest emotional, intimate feelings about God. When I sang those songs, that was real; those were my real feelings. And now, 20 years later, she's the sort of Christian who would condemn me for being a queer Christian- it's not emotionally safe to tell her my feelings about God.

I don't want to show my most real and raw feelings about how I love Jesus, in front of Christians who will judge me and say I don't really love Jesus because I don't hold the "right" beliefs. I don't hold the "right" beliefs about so many things, spanning the whole range of evangelical Christianity, but we can make it simple by just saying I'm queer.

Again, this isn't really something that Childers is doing wrong- as if our favorite singers owe it to us to agree with us about all the big important things in our lives, just because we find their music to be emotionally meaningful. It's more about... like... me wanting an environment where I can express how I really feel, with complete trust that the people seeing it would accept me for who I am, falsely believing that ZOEgirl's music was that environment, and now realizing it wasn't. Realizing I should have my guard up a little more. That I always have to think about who sees me and what they think of me, and filter my expression accordingly.

3. The Rise and Fall of Misery Memoirs (April 11, via) 2-hour-5-minute video. It's about "misery memoirs" that turned out to be completely fabricated (about the Holocaust, drug addiction, satanic rituals, etc). It's about the McMartin preschool trial, where investigators pressured children into making up stories about satanic abuse and secret tunnels and all kinds of wild things. It's about what kinds of "trauma stories" sell, what audiences want to hear and feel. It's about how scammers make up stories that fit The Template, and how real survivors are pressured to present their stories in a certain way. 

One thing this makes me think of is the feminist slogan "believe the victim." The thinking goes, if you come across a story of someone being raped or abused, you should believe it, because only a tiny percent of rape accusations are false, because victims who come forward are often put through a traumatizing process of interrogation and victim-blaming, because there's nothing to gain from making up a story, and a victim would only put themself through that because they really want the truth to come out. 

But it has to be more nuanced than just "believe the victim." It depends on *where* you're encountering this traumatic story. If it's a friend telling you about something that happened to them, you should give them emotional support and try to help them connect with whatever resources they need (therapy, etc). Within that context, you should just believe them and help them. But if you're a journalist writing a story, you should *not* just "believe the victim." You should only publish a story if there's evidence. And if the victim has a large platform and is making this traumatic story into their whole identity, uhhhh, that is even more suspect.

4. On Grindslop (May 20) "What this reveals is that the wealthiest generation of human beings in the history of our species has become so frightened of being seen as a class so terrified of their position being legible that it has begun performing the lives of people who assemble iPhones in near-slavery conditions in Foxconn plants."

3. Trump administration to force foreigners in the U.S. to apply for a green card abroad (May 23) This is absurd. Plenty of immigrants come to the US for education, to work, etc, legally, and then end up building a whole life, maybe even marry a US citizen, and it makes sense for there to be a process for them to get a green card and eventually citizenship. This new policy says they have to uproot their whole life and go to their own country, for who knows how many years, in order to apply for a US green card.

4. US senator says he was pepper-sprayed by federal agents during protest at ICE facility (May 26) "'Some of [the people detained] have been detained more than eight to 12 months,' Ana Paola Pazmiño from Resistencia en Accion New Jersey, a migrant rights organization, claimed, adding: 'The horrible conditions that they’re living in inside are terrible.'"

5. Tennessee judge dismisses federal human smuggling charges against Kilmar Abrego García (May 23) "Abrego Garcia's lawyers argued that the government's criminal case was retaliation because of the embarrassment it caused the Trump administration. After he won his deportation case, he became a sort galvanizing force for critics of the president's hard-line immigration policy. His lawyers asked the court to dismiss the charges under a vindictive prosecution claim." But I think this still isn't over.

Really rich that these MAGAs are claiming they're "protecting women" by being mean to trans people. Here's something that would actually protect women: Don't deport immigrants who are survivors of domestic abuse.

Chinese New Year Decorations (plus highlights from this year's 春晚)

Yesterday was Chinese New Year's Eve, and my husband went and bought decorations for our door. We took down last year's decorations from our door and put up the new ones. These decorations are called 对联 [duì lián]- it's a horizontal banner that goes across the top of the door, plus 2 vertical banners. They have Chinese phrases on them about having a prosperous year.

See, here's something that I didn't *get* until I'd already been in China for a while. The Chinese New Year decorations that people hang on their doors are not the same thing as the concept I have in my head of putting up decorations for various holidays. It's not like, say, Christmas decorations in the US, where you put them up in December and then take them down in January, and if you still haven't taken them down in February, people will start to judge you. Like Christmas is over, why haven't you put your decorations away yet?

The banners we have taped on our door are not like that. Personally, I find it makes more sense to think of them not as "Chinese New Year decorations" but "decorations that we have up all the time, and we replace them at Chinese New Year."

(I just asked my husband "so, this is different from Christmas decorations, where you take them down after a month, right?" and he said, "Why would we take them down? This is our wish for the year.")

There *are* Chinese New Year decorations that are temporary, like the red lanterns hanging outside our apartment building. Those will get taken down when the holiday is done. But the ones people hang on their doors are different. 

It's an example of a subtle cultural difference. How people from different cultures might think they're talking about the same thing- holiday decorations- but they're not.

In the article here, ProPublica says they found the 2 names by looking at "government records"- but I don't understand what these "government records" are and how they got them.

So I guess let's still be skeptical about this? I'm sharing the link now because this was published a week ago and there still seems to be nothing mentioned on the other mainstream news sites (except The Guardian), and I find that very strange.

5. The unfathomable Minnesota transcript that must be read, as it tells the reality of America today (February 5) "What -- what can the Court expect going forward, because this is obviously not workable, and it's certainly not an example of complying with the Court's order, unless you feel it is?"

6. Trump refuses to apologize after posting racist meme of the Obamas (February 7) "'It's the most racist thing I've seen out of this White House. The President should remove it,' said Scott, who is Black."

"Santa Tell Me" is a 2014 song by Ariana Grande. The chorus goes like this:

Santa, tell me if you're really there

Don't make me fall in love again if he won't be here

Next year

Santa, tell me if he really cares

'Cause I can't give it all away if he won't be here

Next year

She is interested in a boy, but doesn't want to fall in love with him if the relationship isn't going to last. So she's asking Santa if she will still be with this guy in 1 year, and also if this guy really cares about her.

She's asking Santa? Since when do people ask Santa for dating advice??? Since when is Santa believed to have the ability to see the future? Since when does Santa read people's minds and feelings?

Like, okay, sure, according to the standard tropes about Santa, he has a "naughty list" and "nice list." I suppose Santa could look this guy up and see which list he's on, but I don't think Santa's naughty/nice binary categorization system is really going to give Ariana Grande the information she needs. Just because this guy is nice enough to deserve a Christmas present doesn't really tell you if he's boyfriend material. This song seems to be implying some kind of knowledge or ability on Santa's part that goes beyond "he's gonna find out who's naughty or nice."

Also, "don't make me fall in love again"- is she saying Santa has the power to manipulate her emotions to stop her from falling in love if the relationship isn't going to last? What? Since when is that something that Santa can do? Or, maybe we should just read this as, he should give her the information she is asking for, and then she will be able to keep *herself* from falling in love.

This song has bothered me for so long because these are just *not* things that Santa is typically regarded as being able to do. This is not the role that people expect Santa to play. He just judges who's "naughty or nice" and gives gifts. That's all. He doesn't give relationship advice, what on earth, who has ever asked Santa of all people for relationship advice? He doesn't predict the future, my goodness. (This seems like more the sort of thing that people would ask God. Not Santa.)

But actually, this is how the Santa mythology has always worked. Pop culture is always adding to it, through songs, movies, Coca-Cola ads, adding to the body of knowledge that people "know" about who Santa is. It changes and develops, and we should read "Santa Tell Me" as an attempt to develop the cultural ideas about Santa in this direction. If it catches on, then there will be more songs and movies made, which portray Santa as an all-knowing relationship-advice-giver, and people will think it's just self-evidently obvious that that's who Santa is, just like it's obvious that he lives at the North Pole and gives gifts to children and has "naughty" and "nice" lists.

Well, the song is from 2014 and this new interpretation of Santa doesn't seem to have caught on. But I will always be on the lookout for anyone else claiming that Santa knows the future and has insights about whether your boyfriend really cares about you.

I haven't read "The Boy in the Striped Pajamas" but the first time I heard about the plot, I assumed that it was meant to make these 2 points:

1. A lot of people in Nazi Germany really had no idea what was going on in the death camps, even military families who lived right next to them. Uh... is there historical evidence of this? If this is not true, then yikes it's extremely irresponsible to write it in a book as if this was a real phenomenon. Sort of saying that the Holocaust just kinda happened and it wasn't really anyone's fault except maybe the leaders at the highest levels.
2. I thought the point of the ending was a judgment on the father- the father is overseeing mass murder throughout the whole book and thinks it's fine, but then when it's his own son getting murdered, then it's a horrible tragedy which wasn't supposed to happen. I assumed- not reading the book but just a summary of it- that the point was to teach the father a lesson about how wrong he was- that the father was getting what he deserved. But I've read criticism of this book which says this is basically just played straight- like the book makes you feel like the tragedy is that the son of a Nazi leader was killed, that's terrible and wasn't supposed to happen, whereas the constant mass murder of Jewish people is fine. I thought the point of the book would be exposing this way of thinking and showing how immoral it is, but ... apparently it doesn't? Like I said I haven't read it, and maybe it's open to interpretation how much the book just kinda goes along with this "it only became a tragedy when this one German child died" and how much it calls out that way of thinking.

3. Chinese Backstreet Boys - That Way (2005) My husband told me this video went viral in China 20 years ago. It's 2 goofy students lip-syncing to "I want it that way." I love this.

Having a human pay attention to the output every time it changes seems incompatible with having things update automatically (which is one of Excel's biggest strengths).

Doesn't seem great if every formula in every cell of your excel sheet has a mind of its own and you can't rely on them being right.

8. Michigan Republican pushing pornography ban linked to porn site, records show (October 7, via) So it was discovered that Schriver, a politician who's been trying to ban porn, used to have an account on a site with sex webcams and the like.

I'm posting this because people are calling it out as obvious hypocrisy, but I think it's a little more complicated than that. In conservative Christian culture, porn is seen as this evil bad thing that all men are naturally drawn to. If they don't have good enough self-control and/or restrictions on their computer, all men would go and make an account on a porn site. A lot of talk about how so many men are "struggling" with porn use, "addicted" to porn, how it's such a bad thing but they're all tangled up in it because it's so tempting.

It makes perfect sense to me that a lot of these conservative lawmakers supporting "porn bans" are men who have been part of this "struggling with porn" subculture- partly interested in it and partly repressing themselves and feeling so much shame- they try to make laws to ban it as a way to fight against their own "porn addiction"- as a way to show God that even though they keep failing in their resolution to not use porn, on some level they really are trying to fight it.

9. The Supreme Court’s First Blockbuster Case This Term Looks Pretty Fake (October 6, via) "And I think, in theory, there’s nothing wrong with bringing a test case. If someone’s rights are really at stake and they haven’t faced punishment yet—but they fear that they will—it’s legitimate for that person to sue. Ah, it's about World Vision discriminating against a woman in a same-sex marriage, who applied for a job. Well that brings me back to The World Vision Debacle of 2014, where the Christian blogosphere found out that World Vision's policies allowed employees to be in same-sex marriages, and oh my goodness it was a huge scandal. So much outrage on the internet. World Vision is a Christian organization that helps impoverished children around the world, but oh my goodness, the evangelical Christians were just beside themselves, ready to cancel World Vision (I guess this was before it was called "cancelling" though). We absolutely cannot help poor children if a gay person might also be helping them, absolutely not. That was the sentiment that Christians were posting all over social media. And as a result of the backlash, World Vision changed their policy- employees are *not* allowed to be in a same-sex marriage.

That was the point where I officially quit being evangelical. The evangelical Christians were all over the internet, loudly proclaiming that we will throw poor children under the bus in order to reject gay people to the fullest extent possible, and I just... this is unredeemable. I can't be a part of this any more. I can't "change it from the inside." I'm done.

This is great news! A few questions that are worth exploring: Does giving cash to some people have any negative effects on other people who didn't get cash? Also, in what kinds of situations does it help to give cash, and in what kinds of situations does it not help? For example, if you're in a big city with very high rent prices, and you say "let's give everyone money, then their rent will be affordable"- well if a big proportion of renters get money, the landlords will just increase the rents, and it won't help the renters. So the issue is that there just isn't enough housing supply- it's not clear that adding money to the situation will help.

In this article, though, it's mostly about families being able to more easily access food and medical care, which aren't going to be limited in that way- so that's good.

3. 小鸭子嘎嘎嘎 - In case you would like to know what kind of music Chinese toddlers are into. My daughter's nanny ("ayi" in Chinese) has been playing this song for her. It's about ducklings. "Ga ga ga" is Chinese for "quack quack quack."

4. Exhausted and Alone, China’s Single Moms Are Moving in Together (August 20) "Posts advertising 'roommate moms' circulate widely, drawing responses from strangers across cities. So the strategy that the MAGAs are using is to find some minor thing where somebody's asylum-seeking process didn't go exactly according to the "rules" (even if this was the government's fault for not having availability to do interviews) and then saying that means the entire thing is invalid. It comes across as "the government is out to get you" rather than "there should be a system where people with genuine reasons are able to claim asylum."
